Comment Options

If you have the Comment core module enabled, you will see an additional option, Comment settings, at the bottom of an item's edit screen. Unless user comments are part of your site's design and you plan on using those, we recommend you simply disable the Comment module from the Modules administrative tab. Otherwise, please refer to the last section of this chapter, “Comments, Forums, and Blogs,” to see how to configure comments.

THE SIMPLIFY MODULE

One of the more useful modules found in Drupal that can help you clean up your user interface, and make it more web application–like, is the Simplify module. Once installed, you will be able to globally hide a lot of the non-content options normally shown to the user when creating or editing content items. For example, you can hide the comments section, or the revision information. These bits of information are useful to see in certain scenarios, but can clutter up your UI for the average user.

We use this module quite often just to hide the text format options for long text and HTML fields. Once we configure the system to allow a certain type of data—such as plain text or full HTML—we really don’t want create or edit content pages to provide options to the user for picking a text format. Thus, you can hide the entire block of HTML, shown in Figure 6-8.
